Tuesday 19th September 2023 marks the end of a decades-long wait for the Picton Bypass, with Member for Wollondilly, Judy Hannan MP today welcoming the news that for the first time ever the Bypass is allocated as a line item in the budget.
Speaking from Parliament House, Judy Hannan MP said, “The budget announcement is a win for the residents of Picton and Wollondilly as a whole, who have patiently endured a frustrating wait for the Bypass for more than 35 years. The Picton Bypass is more than a political football for the residents of Picton, who have seen government after government fail to follow through on promises that this essential piece of infrastructure be built.”
“The inclusion of the Picton Bypass planning means that it won’t be renounced in future years. I thank the Minister for Roads John Graham MLC, Minister for Transport Jo Haylen MP, Minister for Regional Roads Jenny Aitchinson MP and Premier Chris Minns MP for recognising that this project needs to start now - if not yesterday” said Judy Hannan MP.
“The inclusion of $1.388 million that has been allocated for Picton Bypass planning is a small step and I look forward to the full costings and timeframe for the finalised option now being worked on by the Government” said Judy Hannan MP
“Previous reports on the Picton Bypass by Transport NSW have already identified the preferred option for the Bypass, Option 9. Connecting Tahmoor and Thirlmere with the Hume Highway via Picton Road, this will see traffic ease through the centre of Picton, but more importantly gives residents a reliable and swift exit route from these villages in times of emergency such as bushfire and flood” said Judy Hannan MP.
“I will be following the planning process closely, and will continue to advocate for the Bypass to be completed in a timely manner. I look forward to seeing construction work commencing on the Bypass, and celebrating its opening in the near future” concluded Judy Hannan MP.
