Reacting to the joint media release by the Hon Stephen Jones MP, Member for Whitlam and Cr Jesse Fitzpatrick, Mayor of Wingecarribee Shire Council, Independent Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan MP today welcomed the funding commitment for the long awaited upgrades to the Mittagong Memorial Hall and Playhouse.
“The Mittagong Playhouse is a local icon. After it was closed abruptly several years ago due to a structural issue, residents have been waiting far too long to see this beloved venue reopened. I share in their sense of relief and excitement that the funding has been committed to see the renovation finally get underway” said Judy Hannan MP.
“The $4.3million funding commitment under the Government’s Growing Regions Program will allow for the structural issues to be fixed, along with upgrades to make this an outstanding venue for the region.”
“Venues such as the Playhouse are a source of civic pride. Wingecarribee Shire Council has been committed to reopening the Playhouse and their vision to transform it into a unique purpose-designed cultural facility ensures that creativity and culture are embedded in our growing regional areas. Spaces such as these are incredibly important in not only promoting the creative and performing arts but in facilitating connections, attracting tourism, creating jobs and encouraging vibrant nightlife outside major cities.”
“I look forward to joining the Wingecarribee Shire Council, Mayor and residents to celebrate the reopening of the Playhouse, regardless of whether funding is granted by the Federal Labor Government or the Coalition, who has to date been silent on this and should match this funding. Promising funding for Playhouse should be more than just another election promise, it's time that both sides of Parliament who can form Government recognise that these infrastructure investments are vital for cultural development, nightlife and economic growth in regional areas.”
