Community Recognition - 190 Years of George IV In Picton

23rd October, 2025.

The George IV Inn in Picton, also known as The George, is one of Australia's oldest pubs, built in 1835 using convict labour. This November this historic sandstone building and local landmark will have served as an ongoing gathering place for over 190 years. The original liquor license for the George IV in Picton was granted in 1848. This was confirmed by a notice in The Sydney Morning Herald on May 10, 1851, which listed the George IV as having been granted a license in 1848, along with several other establishments in the area. The inn was a key stop for travellers on coach routes from Sydney going south. It originally included a stable, paddocks, and stock yards. It is believed to be one of the oldest licensed pub in NSW. The George was devastated by a severe rain event in 2016 which caused flooding and for the first time in its history, the pub was closed for renovations. The pub was sold in 2017, renovated and restored. Today, the George IV Inn continues its tradition as a local landmark, hosting a range of events from live music to family gatherings.
