Picton Bypass - One step closer
Background
The Wollondilly community has been asking for a Picton Bypass to be built for decades to supplement the heritage listed, single lane, Victoria Bridge on Prince Street, Picton which currently provides an alternate route through Picton’s Argyle Street.
Prior 2021, reducing traffic congestion through Picton was the main argument for the Bypass.
The State government spent $3 million dollars to evaluate the 14 route options and Option 9 was selected - the option previously suggested over twenty years ago by the Department of Transport.
Since 2021, the Wollondilly Council’s Hazards Analysis and Emergency Management Study (HAEMS) has highlighted safety as the main argument for a new bypass. The traffic mayhem during the 2019/2020 bushfire season which stopped both the delivery of emergency services and emergency evacuation of the community, justifies the state funding of Picton Bypass.
Since I have been elected I have successfully worked with this State Government in reviewing all state projects including Picton Bypass and confirmed Option 9 as their choice.
One Step Closer
In the June 2024 Budget, following on from the first time ever listed the project as a separate item in the budget in 2023, the Government committed $18.3 million and called for expressions of interest (EOI) to develop concept designs for the project. Transport for NSW was accepting applications from interested parties up until July 5. An assessment on the preferred organisation will be evaluated with engagement scheduled later in 2024-25.
Current Situation
In 2025, after the contract is accepted, design is complete and full estimated cost is released, there will be a final probity check by the Government. The process has taken so long due in part to inaction in the past and many broken promises. I look forward to working with the Government to deliver this vital project.
