Community Recognition - Dairying in Wollondilly

26th September, 2024.

At the launch of "Dairying in Wollondilly", President of the Oaks Historical Society Trish Hill reminded attendees of the vital role that the Wollondilly Heritage Centre & Museum plays in preserving local history for all to enjoy. The exhibition, created by dedicated volunteers, traces the region's dairying journey, from early hand-milking techniques to modern mechanisation. Local farmers shared personal stories, including memories of milking their first cows as children decades ago, painting a vivid picture of farming life in Wollondilly over the last century. The exhibition captures the evolution of dairy farming, highlighting advances in refrigeration, bulk milk collection, and the rich heritage of the 111 dairy farms recorded in Wollondilly by 1959. The event celebrated the past but also the continued presence of descendants of these pioneer farmers and their role in shaping Wollondilly's identity. Attendees enjoyed afternoon tea with traditional scones and milkshakes, embracing the community spirit. A mural by local artist David Campbell is a unique addition to the exhibition. The launch also marked the announcement of the History Week 2024 school competition winners. Congratulations to Harriet and Matilda Hill for their award-winning entry, "Marking Time," a heartwarming story about Daisy, the dairy cow.
