8th August, 2024.
On 13 July my husband, Neil, and I were delighted to attend a morning tea at Lake Couridjah to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Friends of Thirlmere Lakes. The morning tea had a turnout of more than 25 community members, all of whom are dedicated to the preservation of the lakes. Local activist and environmentalist Julie Sheppard delivered the keynote speech, which was on the history of the lakes. The friends group was formed in 2014 by a group of community members who were concerned about the disappearing water levels of the lakes.
For over 10 years, the friends have advocated for and looked after the lakes in cooperation with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. The friends have been part of the Thirlmere Lakes Research Program, which is a genuine collaboration and engagement with the National Parks, university researchers, Indigenous Elders and the community. The Friends of Thirlmere Lakes represent the best of our community, and Neil and I are proud of our association with the group. We look forward to future monthly catch-ups and future celebrations of the group.
