Community Recognition - Moyengully Bridge

20th March, 2025.

A bridge in Wollondilly has recently been named Moyengully Bridge, after the last war chief of the Gundungurra people. The naming of the bridge honours the legacy of the Burra Burra man and leader of the Nattai tribe. Located on Mulhollands Road, near the junction with Barkers Lodge Road in Picton and spanning Stonequarry Creek, the naming ceremony was attended by Gundungurra elder Aunty Kazan Brown, friends, family and community members, along with Wollondilly Shire Mayor and Councillors. The Dharwal community was represented by Aunty Glenda Chalker.

Aunty Kazan was recently awarded the First Nations History Award, issued by the History Council NSW, in their annual History Awards. Aunty Kazan is a direct descendant of Moyengully. She was inspired to research her family's history in the Burragorang Valley and her preservation of this significant aspect of Wollondilly's history is recognised in her well deserved award.  Her work focused on the impacts that raising the Warragamba dam wall would have on the significant cultural sites in the area, and led to an exploration of her own family history and connection to the area.
