There is a remarkable mural on the wall of the Rural Fire Service Hall in Hill Top, honouring the brigade’s longest serving volunteers Brian Coates and John Matters. It is a spectacular painting and a moving dedication. Brian was a respected and long-serving member of the RFS and I was saddened to hear of his passing this month. Brian contributed over 75 years of dedicated service to the RFS after joining as a teenager. Rising through the ranks, he served as Deputy Captain, Senior Deputy Captain, and Captain, offering decades of leadership and mentoring.
Brian’s operational knowledge and understanding of local fire history were unmatched. He served on the District Bush Fire Management Committee for over 10 years, and led critical operations during the 2000–2001 and 2019–2020 bushfire seasons. His efforts helped protect numerous lives and properties during some of the most devastating fire events. In recognition of his service, Brian was awarded the National Medal (4th Clasp), RFS Long Service Medal (6th Clasp), National Emergency Medal, and the Premier’s Bushfire Citation.
My heartfelt condolences to the Coates family, especially Ian and Michelle, and to all Brigade members. Brian, you will be missed.
