James Fitzgibbons was nominated for the Wingecarribee Shire Council Australia Day 2026 Award for his outstanding dedication to supporting vulnerable families, elderly residents, and isolated individuals across the Southern Highlands and Goulburn regions. As creator and co-founder of the Australian DIY Families Institute in 2020. The Institute has helped deliver more than 110 tonnes of food and essential items to people in need, many living on remote rural properties between Bundanoon and Goulburn. James' charity helps improve the lives of the most vulnerable. Focused on supporting sole-parent families, the Institute provides an essential lifeline through foodbank programs, op shops, and secondhand stores, offering comfort, stability, and a brighter future. James works seven days a week coordinating the delivery of free food hampers and oversees the operation of two community stores. His nomination reflects the deep gratitude of the community and recognises his remarkable commitment to dignity, connection, and practical support for those most in need.
