Community Recognition - Stephen Jones

20th February, 2025.

I wish to pay tribute to Stephen Jones, the Federal member for Whitlam, as he prepares to leave politics at the next election after 15 years in the Federal Parliament. Stephen has represented the electorate of Throsby and, after redistribution, the electorate of Whitlam with great distinction since his election in 2010. He is justifiably proud of the role he has played in progressing marriage equality, gambling ad reform, securing the future of the local steel industry, and rebuilding TAFE. Stephen's contribution as Assistant Treasurer has also been valued from fighting scams to protecting the superannuation of workers, increasing the accessibility of financial records, and strengthening consumer protections for all of us. He has also played a significant role in finalising the Commonwealth's response to the Banking Royal Commission. Politics is not an easy business and after 15 years of public life, Stephen has decided to leave parliamentary service. But I, along with Whitlam locals, hope that Stephen continues to play a role in public service, for his dedication to his community is one of his greatest strengths. I wish Stephen and his family all the very best, and give him my thanks for his service.
