Judy Hannan welcomed the announcement in the 2023-24 budget of a commitment to expanding the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in our region.
“This significant investment in EV charging stations is a commendable step towards a sustainable and greener future for New South Wales. I am encouraged that the New South Wales government is taking Australia’s commitment to achieve greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets of net zero by 2050 seriously. This commitment echoes the promises made through the election, demonstrating a resolute dedication to reducing emissions and promoting cleaner transportation options.”
“The Wollondilly electorate is well known for its popular tourist destinations such as the picturesque Southern HIghlands, so the $20 million allocation for co-funding for destination charging along tourist routes will hopefully make our electorate even more accessible for those with EVs, negating ‘range-anxiety’ associated with longer day trips. The chargers in commuter carparks will certainly benefit residents who commute, with close to 80% of the working population leaving the Wollondilly Council area daily this will no doubt benefit many that need to travel the distances to the centralised commuter carparks”
“While I applaud this progress, I note that there is more work to be done. Initiatives such as home rebates and other additional measures to incentivise EV purchases remain essential components of a robust EV strategy. To reach the 2023-34 budget goal of 50% of all new car sales to be electric, more can be done to encourage the sale of electric cars over traditional fossil fueled vehicles, and other options such as retrofitting existing cars with new electric engines and other rebate schemes such as BASIX changes that will give bonus points for home charge stations should be explored.”
“I am energised by the budget announcement prioritising the accessibility of EVs and charging infrastructure, and will continue collaborating with ministers to ensure a comprehensive and accessible EV ecosystem that benefits all residents and encourages uptake.”
